12/27/2005:..Fire burns swimmers' home.  No one home when blaze began early this morning.
Bowling Green, KY...BURTON SPEAKMAN, The Daily News /783-3240
Published: December 27, 2005.
Five Western Kentucky University swimmers are without a place to live after a fire early today destroyed their rental house on Kentucky Street. The Bowling Green Fire Department arrived at 3:22 a.m. at 1285 Kentucky St., a home that used to be split into apartments. The fire had been extinguished by about 6:45 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the home was already fully engulfed in flames, according to a fire department report. Ashes from the fire were spread along the sidewalk, street and several houses away. Heat from the fire was intense enough to damage siding at each of the three homes surrounding the fire, including one across 11th Avenue, and melted tail lights on three vehicles.

Investigators were back at the scene by 8 a.m. searching for evidence to determine a cause of the fire, said fire investigator Terry McDaniel. "There were no injuries in the fire; all the residents were college students who were away for the holiday,"; he said. It took seven units and 19 personnel to get the fire under control, said Marlee Boenig, public information officer for department. Firefighters arrived within three minutes of the call, Boenig said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, McDaniel said. The incident remains under investigation. "There are still some witnesses we need to talk to,"; he said.  McDaniel said he would return to the home another day to take a second look through the remains to determine the fire's cause.

While investigators were on the scene, one of the occupants arrived.  "I got a call at 5:30 (a.m.) from my swimming coach. He said, ;I've got good news and bad news. The good news is you're OK. The bad news is your house burned down,' "; said resident Keith Janson. "It took a couple of minutes to sink in.";  There hadn't been any problems with the electrical system or gas in the house, Janson said.

"At least nothing that wasn't normal for an older house like a circuit breaking or a fuse going out,"; Janson said.
"Our coach told me he's on the phone making calls to work with the university to find us a place to live,"; he said. "Our landlord also owns some other places and said he is going to try to help us.";  The swimmers need a place to live before Jan. 14 when they return to Bowling Green after two weeks of training in Florida, he said.

Janson's father, Dennis, of Fort Thomas drove with him to Bowling Green this morning.  A couple of the other residents are on their way to the assess the damage to their home, Keith Janson said.  Dennis Janson stood outside the line and took pictures of the home for the family's insurance policy as Keith Janson gave information about the layout of the home to McDaniel.

A preliminary damage estimate for the home and its contents is $220,000, Boenig said.
